FA 209 Painting 1 Week 5

On Tuesday students continued the wet blend painting, now dry students can add richer values in both the lights and shadows. Students should now work towards adding detail and harder edges. Thursday demonstration was given for stage 1 of the Warm Cool Palette project. Using only Ivory Black, Transparent Earth Red and Titanium White students will create a double image panel that has one painting leaning towards the warm earth red end of the three color spectrum and the other side should lean towards the cool black side. This project will continue through next week and we will hold a critique for the first three paintings on Thurs Sept 29.

FA 209 Painting 1 Week 6

Week 6 recap - this week students participated in a drawing workshop with visiting artist James D'Andrea on Tuesday, while finishing up their warm/cool painting projects on Thursday. A Limited Earth color palette demonstration was given on Thursday as well.

FA 218 Painting 2

Week 4 recap- this week students finished up their second painting and started the third. Demonstration included more portraits and a Wet in wet still life demo with burnt umber and white oil paint.

FA 218 Painting 2 Week 1-2

Week 1-2 Recap - Students were assigned painting projects 1 and 2 for this semester focusing on an object series (#1) and a portrait (#2).  Demonstrations included both the Grisaille method approach (drawing with paint) and the Wipe Out method (Burnt Umber).  Next week will focus on the portrait series and some palette choice approaches for skin tones and color balances.

FA 209 Painting 1 Week 10

Week 10 Recap - This week student worked on finishing painting 1 of the palette project.  Students should look to plan out the other two as time in the semester is short.  Students were also invited to begin their final project which has only the requirement that it is 18"x24" or larger.  Students will choose the subject, style and palette.

Week 9 Recap - This week students finished up their Color Box paintings while being introduced to the Palette Project.  Students are tasked with creating 3 paintings using the Style, Palette, Subject Matrix.  One choice from each column are required as follows (Style - Shellac, Palette - Mud, Subject - Vanitas). Demonstration #2 will be a Wet in Wet, Mud Palette, Portrait.

Week 7 Recap - This week students began painting #6 Color Box.  Students were asked to now use a full compliment of primary and secondary colors to highlight the color influence created by placing objects in a color box still life.

Week 6 Recap - This week students worked on project 5 Limited Earth Palette.  Students using only the 4 colors (IB, RS, AC, TW) created a still life painting of simple subjects.  Next week students will begin project 6 Color Box.

Week 5 Recap - This week the Limited Earth or Dead Palette project was introduced.  By using only Ivory Black, Raw Sienna, Alizarin Crimson and Titanium White students will create a color wheel to find all colors and values of this limited palette.

Week 3 Recap - This week students worked on two exercises, wet in wet (burnt umber and white) and monochromatic warm cool painting.  Students will continue to work on these still life pieces the following week as well.

 Week 2 Recap - On Tues students continued working on the grisaille painting exercise.  Focusing primarily on fading out the initial paint drawing and paying more attention to edges and values.  On Thurs students made a Burnt Umber Imprimatura wipe out painting.  Students strove to recreate a full value picture using only the various shades of umber.

Week 9 Recap - This week students continued working on their East vs West, Cyr Mixed Media and Photo Reference projects.  On Thursday students were also asked to submit a paragraph about the subject, palette, approach and technique they plan to use for the final project.
