FA 104 Figure Drawing 2 Week 5

Week 5 recap - this week students continued working on creating figures in a common space using the scaling method. This practice will lead to a longer mid term drawing during the week of Oct 8-10. Next week students will begin the focus on anatomy. Homework #1 was also collected on Thursday.

FA 209 Painting 1 Week 5

Week 5 recap - on Tuesday students began the warm/cool painting project. Student will paint two small still lifes on one panel. The choices for color palettes are: a. Ivory black, titanium white and transparent red oxide or b. any one bright color with black and white to change the values. Student should budget about 1.5 class periods for each.

FA 106 Color Theory Week 5

Week 5 recap- this week students worked on completing the ink blot/ double face color field theory project. Students should create the following: a. One color looking like two others, b. two colors looking like the same color, c. Color vibration, d. High and low intensity color. Next week students will begin the faces of the mohawk valley pixel portrait.

Week 5 recap - on Monday students had time to work on completing the 3 midterm object/theme drawings or start the growth drawing project.

FA 104 Figure Drawing 2 Week 4

Week 4 Recap- Tuesday students focused on the 6parts of light and mastering form shading. Thursday students were introduced to the figure in space exercises. This will lead to continued practice building up to a midterm drawing. Homework is again 9 object drawings and one value invented shape.

FA 209 Painting 1 Week 4

Week 4 recap- on Tuesday students finished work on the Wipe out imprimatura while a Wet in wet demonstration was given. Thursday students made wet in wet paintings. Homework #2 - draw 4 new composition thumbnails using Landscape, Circular, Portrait and Irregular formats. Plus reading in the texts

FA 106 Color Theory Week 4

Week 4 recap- this week students finished their presentations for the color match project. On Tuesday students were introduced to the color ink blot/double face project.

FA 202 Intermediate Drawing Week 4

Week 4 recap - Monday this week students were introduced to a deconstruction/transformation exercise for addressing possible solutions for midterm drawings.  Looking specifically at the formal elements of composition students were encouraged to try and simplify their object/theme into something more abstract or transform their object/theme through a series of drawings into something else.  Wednesday due to incredible weather, the class drew nature studies in ink outdoors.  Students were asked to make a few ink drawings that had a visual base in something natural they observed from outdoors.

FA 104 Figure Drawing 2 Week 3

Week 3 recap -this week students focused on foreshortened pose drawings, transitioning from gesture to long pose tonal pieces. On Thursday students made two drawings on toned paper, one which will be submitted for grading.


FA 209 Painting 1 Week 3

Week 3 recap - Tuesday students were introduced to project # 2 the imprimatura wipe out painting. At the start of class students shared questions they created based on the homework readings. Then an introductory demonstration was given on the technical approaches to creating this piece. After a short class break student attended the gallery opening for Auguries and Divinations by James D'Andrea. Thursday students began their own wipe out pieces as the class demo was completed.

FA 106 Color Theory Week 3

Week 3 recap - this week students focused on completing the color matches and designing the final presentation for the matches. A demonstration on creating a background image for the presentation was given.

FA 202 Intrmt Drawing Week 3

Week 3 recap - on Monday we began a Thumbnail to Final Refinement exercise. First we watched a pencil drawing demonstration by Feng Zhu. Then students made a series of 20+ thumbnails of their chosen Object/Theme. Then choosing 3-6 of these thumbnails student refined the image after it was photocopied to a larger size. From this second group students chose 1 or 2 to be again copied  and enlarged. Student were then asked to refine the drawing once more making a finished piece for the series. Thursday students continued to finish this process as a demonstration from the "cloud" theme was made.

FA 104 Figure Drawing 2 Week 2

Week 2 Recap- Tues students started back making gesture drawings in their sketchbooks. Thurs students reviewed drawing correct proportions and the landmarks of the body. Next week students will begin foreshortening drawings.

FA 209 Painting 1 Week 2

Week 2 Recap - Tues students were introduced to the grisaille painting exercise. After a brief demonstration students began making their own paintings using only black and white oil paint. Thurs students continued their work and finished the first painting. Tues sept 10th students will begin the next painting Wipe Out using burnt umber only.

FA 106 Color Theory Week 2

Week 2 Recap - Tues students began painting colors that show mixes between two compliments and harmonies.  Then students created a color triad showing all the mixes and tones between the three colors shown. Thurs student began color matches and are asked to make at least 10 matches that have the exact same Hue, Value, Temperature and Intensity.

FA 202 Intrm Drawing Week 2

Week 2 Recap - Mon Labor Day no class, Wed students were introduced to the Object/Theme Analysis project and the Sketchbook project.  Students should have their object or theme choice finalized by class Mon Sept 9 so we can explore a few drawing approaches for creating a more finalized piece.  The Sketchbook project is an on going semester long visual journal and students should draw for 1-2hrs each week.

Fall Semester 2013

Week 1 Recap -
Wednesday - FA 202 Intermediate Drawing we reviewed the course syllabus and discussed both the required materials and the schedule for course projects.  Students can expect to begin work on the Object Analysis project after a brief discussion of the project handout.  Students should plan to bring their sketchbook to class as the Sketchbook project will also be introduced on Wed Sept 4. DO NOT forget to bring your Object/Theme for our first project.  Finally remember to bring the course textbook Sketchbook for the Artist by Sarah Simblet
Thursday - FA 106 Color Theory students reviewed the course syllabus and discussed required materials and course schedules/policies.  Students should come to class on Tues with: paints, brushes, palette, bristol paper to begin work on a color space exploration exercise. 
FA 209 Painting 1 students should bring the following to class on Tues Sept 3: Titanium White 150ml, Ivory Black 37ml, brushes, palette, canvas panel 11"x14" and mediums (turps and neomeg or galykd). Students should also bring both textbooks to class The Complete Oil Painter by Brian Gorst and Oils in 10 Steps by Ian Sidaway. 
FA 104 Figure Drawing 2 Students should come to class with sketchbook, drawing paper pad, and a drawing implement. Textbook is Figure Drawing: Design and Invention by Michael Hampton.
