FA 106 Color Theory AM Week 6

On Tuesday we held a quick critique of the Color Match projects before making the designs for the Face Blot project. This project focuses on the concept of Color Field Theory. This principle of color says that a color will be influenced by the colors that surround it and they can have a strong affect on each other in some cases. Once students finished 4 designs for each the Blots and Faces the best 2 of each where then transferred on a layout for the color exercise portion of this project. Each box exercise should be on a 8"x5" or 9"x6". Exercises A and D will have two different color background colors.

FA 106 Color Theory PM Week 6

This week students finished their Color match projects and started work on the designs for the Color Face Blot project. The double face designs are made by cutting a frame, eyes, nose and mouth out of a half sheet of copy paper. The paint blots are made by drawing in a small amount of paint from your tube on half sheet of copy paper then pressing the two sides together. Students will make 4 face designs and 4 paint blots minimum. Next week we will examine the exercise portion of the project.

FA 104 Figure Drawing 2 Week 5

On Tuesday students focused on fitting the figure into a given size on the page before introducing the Figure in Perspective Space concept and process. Thursday student continued with Figure Space but introduced sitting poses into the mix. A seated (stool or chair) figure should be 3/4 the full standing figure height, and a floor seated figure is just above 1/2 full height. Next week we will include adding a background to the figure compositions.

FA 209 Painting 1 Week 5

On Tuesday students continued the wet blend painting, now dry students can add richer values in both the lights and shadows. Students should now work towards adding detail and harder edges. Thursday demonstration was given for stage 1 of the Warm Cool Palette project. Using only Ivory Black, Transparent Earth Red and Titanium White students will create a double image panel that has one painting leaning towards the warm earth red end of the three color spectrum and the other side should lean towards the cool black side. This project will continue through next week and we will hold a critique for the first three paintings on Thurs Sept 29.

FA 106 Color Theory AM Week 5

Students worked this week to continue making color matches with their original swatches from the paint store. The instructor custom cut broken hearts to paste onto the presentation of the sad or stoic girl image. Next week we will critique the color match project.

FA 106 Color Theory PM Week 5

This week students used lab time to continue to make color swatch matches. Demonstration began for creating a presentation for the final color matches. Each match should be paired with the original swatch - cut and pasted onto a presentation board that may be simple and geometric or have a common theme with custom shapes. The instructor was working to make a copy in the style of former MV student Kai Samuels Davis.

FA 104 Figure Drawing 2 Week 4

On Tuesday students began by using vine charcoal to focus on creating the 6 distinct tones of Light. (1 - Highlight HL, 2 - Light L, 3 - Half Tone 1/2T, 4 - Reflected Light RL, 5 - Core Shadow CS, 6 - Cast Shadow CA). On Thursday students focused on the balance aspect of creating a drawing. Using vertical balance lines from either the Pit of the neck (front view), Ear (side view) or the C7 vertebrae (back view). Students worked to fit the whole figure on the page while also making sure the balance with the feet was correctly placed. Next week we will study figure space.

FA 209 Painting 1 Week 4

This week students worked to finish up their Wipe out painting project while having a demonstration on the Wet in Wet blending technique. Creating a light tan base layer students will sgraffito draw into the wet paint to create a loose compositional layout. Then students will use Burnt Umber to begin blocking in the drawing and values of the piece as each stroke will begin blending to the wet under layer. Students should pay close attention to edges between strokes and work to add both darks and lights to the piece with burnt umber and white.

FA 106 Color Theory AM Week 4

This week students worked on their color triads and held a critique of the design concepts before transitioning into the color matching project. Students will be asked to match 10 paint swatches (minimum) in hue, value, temperature and intensity.

FA 104 Figure Drawing 2 Week 3

This week we focused on foreshortened poses and making a figure sit flatly in the picture. Tuesday we continued with more warm ups and practice poses, while Thursday students made a shaded drawing of a foreshortened figure to submit for grading.

FA 209 Painting 1 Week 3

On Tuesday this week students enjoyed a transparent imprimatura (wipe out) demonstration before attending the Art Faculty show in the Juergensen Gallery. Thursday students began their own paintings in the wipe out method.
1. Coat canvas with wet layer of burnt umber oil paint.
2. Draw into the wet paint with the back part of your brush known as the sgraffito method.
3. Once sgraffito is finished begin wiping out light areas of still life composition using a rag. Don't be afraid to over wipe to get strong light areas more paint can always correct mistakes.
4. Begin correcting the wipe out with filbert brush and burnt umber. Pay attention to edges and overlaps to keep soft atmosphere of wipe out method.
5. Readdress the lights using terps and kneaded eraser to strongly removed paint in any highlight areas.
6. Continue push and pull process, adding or removing paint to set up a precise interpretation of the light and shadow pattern of your still life. Always allow yourself to end the first session with more soft edges and extra light wiping, day two is the better time to resolve detail and fix edges/darker values.
7. On day 2 once dry, oil out any areas where you will work or that have sunk into the picture. students may begin to add more highlights using white paint and the scumble method. Remember that the pressure of the brush determines the amount of paint deposited on the peaks and valleys of the canvas weave.
8. Identifiy areas where a second glaze of burnt umber may allow for richer dark values. When addressing any type or lettering on objects always remember to focus on the shapes they create, DO NOT use your handwriting in this picture.
9. Step back assess your work, squint and make sure the value ranges of your painting reflect the still life in an accurate way.
